Letter from the Editor |
Greetings everyone!
2023 is here, with the first month already in the books, and the FRS continues to be active with the FRS winter board meeting to be held at the end of this month on Saturday, Feb 25th. Some related items to share:
The 2023 Annual Meeting of the FRS/FRBMA will be held July 14-16 (Friday through Sunday) at the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota. Once again, there will be a fantastic slate of speakers to attend. Also like before, there will be a research agenda for the meeting with poster presentations from across the state. If you are a trainee or mentor to trainees, please disseminate information about the poster sessions to encourage participation. There are also several committees within the FRS. If you are interested serving on of these committees, please do not hesitate to let us know. We appreciate your interest in improving the society! FRS President’s Message |
Happy New Year!
I recently attended the 2023 FRBMA Annual Winter Retreat.
The FRBMA leadership had a great line up of speakers.
Topics included:
- Bringing innovation back to our core practices
- Importance of marketing/branding
- Leadership lessons on empowering our teams
- Update on new Medicare Fee Schedule/MIPS/Value
I encourage anyone who is interested in being more involved with your organization’s business administration to attend the future FRBMA Meetings.
Non-Clinical expertise is becoming more and more important for a radiologist as we move forward with more complex payment structures and reimbursement cuts. Partnering with the Health System administration and bringing value that goes beyond providing radiology coverage is no longer an option but a necessity to secure our future. |

FRBMA Winter Retreat 2023
Another One for the Books!
Our FRBMA Winter Retreat was held in Orlando at the Renaissance SeaWorld Hotel on January 27th, 2023. Earlier in 2022, the board convened to discuss whether a winter retreat remained a viable option for our membership. The past few years, prior to and through COVID, the meeting was met with dwindling attendance and sponsorship. After much consideration, the decision was made to move forward with the meeting, with a goal to refresh our speaker list, enter the world of social media and expand our sponsorship and attendance opportunities.
Our FRBMA LinkedIn page was launched in the fall with the help of board members Janene Markuske and Karen Schell. We are actively looking to connect with Florida RBMA members to share our experiences and knowledge. Social media and FRS/FRBMA website are key components of this outreach. In addition to expanding our outward communications, we set up a tiered registration option to allow Florida leaders to bring their non RBMA member colleagues and staff to the meeting at a reduced rate. In doing so, we are encouraging radiology leaders to assist us in identifying and building the leaders of tomorrow.
We were thrilled and excited to gain a huge response from our sponsor community who truly made this meeting possible through their generous donations. In all, we had a record 16 companies that offered their time and donations to this event. A heartfelt thank you to all our sponsors.
Platinum Sponsor:
Royal Health Solutions
Gold Sponsor:
MSN Healthcare Solutions
Silver Sponsors:
ALPHAII, Advocate, Preferred Radiology Alliance, RezLegal, MagMutual
Bronze Sponsors:
Gulf Coast Collections, RadAI, RadiologyBill, Medality, MedInformatix, RadPayor, Landau & Associates
Speakers:
Think Integrated, BKS Partners
Our meeting began with a casual cocktail reception the prior evening. The reception was well attended and provided the perfect backdrop for attendees and sponsors to connect and mingle prior to the meeting. On Friday, we had an amazing line up of speakers providing attendees with tools for challenging their imagination, developing successful leadership teams, navigating insurance and human resources in the current landscape, and successfully marketing their practice. Key information and updates were provided for RBMA Leadership, MIPS and MPRS final rule and current climate for Florida radiology practices. Sincere thanks to Dr Desai, FRS President for opening our meeting and attending the conference with our members.
A full house of over 45 attendees actively participated in the day which ended in some fun raffles, much enthusiasm and a renewed commitment to future growth and education opportunities for our Florida chapter of RBMA. We are already planning our Winter Retreat 2024! |

Legislative Update |
The legislative session is fast approaching as we start March 7th this year.
The Legislature has been busy with committee weeks. Legislation is still being filed and the committee hearings are full of presentations and information. Not very many bills have been heard to date. It is too soon to predict; but, so far it has been fairly quiet on issues relating to the medical community.
The Governor’s proposed budget is due to be presented to the Legislature by February 5th.
The month of February consists of three back-to-back committee weeks with a week off and then session begins.
I am looking forward to seeing President Desai and this year’s group of residents coming to visit for the first week of Session.
I hope everyone had a safe and healthy holiday season. Happy New Year! |

Martin Northup Resident Leadership Award |
H. Martin Northup Resident Leadership Award – A scholarship opportunity for Florida Diagnostic Radiology, Radiation Oncology and Medical Physicist 2nd year Residents or graduate students.
Martin Northup was very committed to radiology resident education and advancement. To eternally honor and remember him, the board of the FRS Foundation has established a special award bearing his name, the “H Martin Northup Resident Leadership Award.” Each year, this award will be given to a 2nd year Florida radiology resident who will be a 3rd year at the time of the fellowship to support the cost of accommodations for attending the FRS annual summer meeting. The resident will have an officer mentor and will attend all functions including the board meeting. The goal is to develop future leaders in Radiology and develop promising residents to assume greater roles in the society, such as President of the Resident and Fellow’s Section. The award recipient will be chosen for the 2023 Annual Meeting in Sarasota, Florida, July 14-16, 2023 by the Scholarships and Grants committee based on a competitive application process.
Please check with your Program Director to be considered for this opportunity and to complete the application. Return your completed application to lroger@edusymp.com by May 15, 2023 in order to be considered for this award.

Become a PAC Member Today |
Attention FRBMA Members! Please support the cause. We encourage you to be PAC members and supporters; you do not have to belong to the FRS. Donations can be made online through our PAC website www.FLRADPAC.org. Thank you for your donation: Dr. Letter, Mergo.
It is critical that we support both our Florida PAC and RADPAC in order to bolster our voice in Tallahassee and Washington, respectively. Please join FRS lobbyist Alison Dudley in her special appeal for all Florida radiologists to become Florida PAC members. If you would like to help FRS defend radiology against untoward legislation and introduce bills that have a positive impact on our practices, we need your financial support to re-elect our friends in the state House and Senate. The FRS can also show you simplified ways on how to sign up your radiology group. Contact Lorraine Roger or contact Alison Dudley at for more information. |
