Letter from the Editor |
Hello everyone!
As I am writing this, the ACR Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. is only a few days away. Stay tuned for next month’s E-brief for a recap of the meeting, celebrating the centennial of the ACR.
As for some other ACR news this month:
There will be a webinar regarding non-interpretive AI tools that are available for clinical practice on May 31. For those interested in participating, you may sign up here:
Beyond Interpretation: Unleashing the Potential of Non-Interpretive AI in Radiology (acr.org)
Registration is now open for the 2023 Quality and Safety + Informatics Conference in San Diego, Oct 24-26. The theme of the conference is “Scaling Quality and Innovation.” You can learn more and register here:

Speaking of quality, the ACR is seeking concepts for quality measure development. Measure concepts developed or refined from this process by the ACR Metrics Committee are intended for use in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). FRS President’s Message |
In the 2nd week of May, many of us will gather together in Washington, D.C. for the Annual ACR Meeting when the ACR celebrates its 100th year anniversary. Our specialty has evolved/advanced and changed dramatically over this time period. What will the next 100 years be like?
The most recent transition and push is from fee-for-Service (many call this the old way) to a value-based care and payment system. Many of us are still struggling to understand the complexities in the new payment systems and are wondering what is the future of our specialty.
You may recall when the IBM and Dell era of the computer industry decided to vertically integrate manufacturing and services to fully control the supply chains by partnering or acquiring with suppliers. Will the Insurance companies consider doing the same in the next decade and vertically integrate supply chains (physicians/practices) to control costs by acquiring medical practices/physician groups?
For Example:
CVS Health is plunging deeper into primary care services, buying primary care provider Oak Street Health for approximately $10.6 billion. “Walmart Health Nearly Doubles in Size with Launch into Two New States in 2024.” Many Walmart clinics include x-ray services.

Amazon acquired primary care provider One Medical.

Are we on the menu next?
“Radiologists and other specialists are now operating under UnitedHealth Group ownership after the industry giant recently bought a prominent practice headquartered in Middletown, New York.”

FRBMA President’s Message |
PARADIGM 2023- RBMA National Meeting in Florida!
RBMA’s National meeting was held in Hollywood Florida this past month. The venue was beautiful, touting dueling intracoastal and ocean views that set the tone for a great event! This year’s annual meeting was chock-full of vendors and speakers providing multiple avenues for sharing and learning across the four-day span of the convention.
Seema Verma, Former Secretary of CMS and Medicaid opened up the meeting with an insider perspective on the Medicare system and the necessary focus for shifting to value-based care in order to maintain the solvency of the program. The official Key-Note address was provided by Jacqueline Bello, MD, FACR and entitled: “Radiology’s Role in Achieving Health Equity – An Opportunity to Save Dollars”. Dr Bello provided a compelling overview of the need to increase access to diagnostic imaging and health equity from a national and global perspective.
The remaining sessions covered a variety of tracts in many areas of interest: AI and its importance in clinical and non-clinical arenas; digital marketing and reputation management; evolving practice structures; hiring extenders and new radiologists; new business creation via OBL (office-based labs for interventional procedures); revenue cycle management; and a nice complement of diversity, equity, and inclusion for consideration as we provide for development of new leaders in radiology.
As an attendee, it was refreshing to network with people across the country, commiserating and celebrating our similarities and differences. My take-aways were focused on ways to further develop efficiencies and effectiveness within our practices. Data analytics is a key component to not only identify the need for program enhancements, but also measure their success post implementation. The conference provided attendees access to multiple vendors with comprehensive analytics platforms which are meant to be vendor-agnostic and readily available.
The social aspects of Paradigm never disappoint, from the opening receptions in the exhibit hall to the closing event complete with street performers, DJ music, food and libations to cap it off. The award ceremony highlighted Lake Medical Imaging, based in Leesburg, Florida as the recipient of the RBMA Collaborative Award. We are proud to have a Florida chapter practice honored at the national level and congratulate FRBMA Past-President and current Secretary, Troy Purcell, along with Dr. Keller and the rest of their team for this distinction.
With our FRBMA Winter Retreat and RBMA Paradigm in our rear-view mirrors, we now focus our sites on the upcoming FRS/FRBMA Annual Meeting to be held at the Ritz- Carlton Sarasota, Florida July 14th-16th, 2023. Please spread the word and plan to attend! |

Legislative Update |
We are in the last week of Legislative Session and the Appropriations Conference Chairs met for the final time today. We now wait for the budget to hit the member’s desk for the 72-hour cooling off period before they can take up the budget and vote it out to the Governor.
Many bills we are tracking are still moving through the process; so, I will wait for the June E-brief to report on what has passed.
Thanks to everyone for all their help and support. |

FACR Application |
Although there are multiple pathways to ACR Fellowship, by providing opportunities for leadership and involvement, chapters give members an opportunity for recognition as an ACR Fellow. This designation is attained by only an estimated 10 percent of radiologists that belong to the ACR and represents a significant career accomplishment. Chapters also serve as a vital link for recommendation of candidates for ACR Fellowship to the ACR Committee on Fellowship.
If you think you meet these criteria and wish to apply to become an ACR fellow with Florida chapter nomination please contact the FRS at lroger@edusymp.com. Years in training do not count as member years.
If you are applying for Fellowship, the Chapter Deadline is May 31st.

Florida Radiological Society Job Fair
Sunday, July 16, 2023 from 11:15 AM – 2:00 PM
The FRS first created the Radiologist Job Fair, in response to requests from both Florida radiologists-in-training seeking employment and Florida radiology groups seeking to hire radiologists.

Call for Volunteer FRS/FMA Delegates |
The FRS is seeking volunteers to be an FMA delegate. These openings are on a first come, first serve basis. If you are an FMA and FRS member and agree to be an FMA delegate to represent the FRS, please contact Lorraine Roger at lroger@edusymp.com by the deadline May 11th.
As an FMA/FRS Delegate you would attend the House of Delegates meeting to represent the interests of the FRS with other FMA/FRS delegates. Below is the FMA official description:
The FMA House of Delegates (House) is the legislative and business body of the FMA. Its members are the officers of the FMA, the elected members of the Board of Governors, and the delegates officially elected by the component societies, specialty societies, Specialty Society Section, Young Physicians Section, Medical Student Section, Resident & Fellow Section and the FMA Alliance. The House meets annually at a time and location determined by the FMA Board of Governors. It is the responsibility of the Speaker of the House to prepare the agenda and assure consideration and completion of its business.
The business of the formal sessions of House is established by a blend of tradition and requirements of the Association’s charter and bylaws, and includes:
- Setting policy for the FMA by acting on recommendations from the Board of Governors and resolutions presented by component county medical societies, recognized specialty medical societies, special sections and delegates.
- Hearing addresses and reports from the Treasurer, Speaker, and outgoing and incoming Presidents.
- Presenting awards recognizing distinguished work by members of the FMA and others whom the FMA decides to honor.
- Electing Officers, Board members and AMA Delegates.
The 2023 FMA Annual Meeting • July 28-30 • Hyatt Regency Orlando
The first House is scheduled to meet on Saturday, July 29, from 8-9:30 a.m., followed by four Reference Committee hearings from 10-11:30 a.m. The House will reconvene on Sunday, July 30, from 8 a.m.-noon. Become a PAC Member Today |
Attention FRBMA Members! Please support the cause. We encourage you to be PAC members and supporters; you do not have to belong to the FRS. Donations can be made online through our PAC website www.FLRADPAC.org. Thank you for your donation: Dr. Batlle, Letter, Mergo.
It is critical that we support both our Florida PAC and RADPAC in order to bolster our voice in Tallahassee and Washington, respectively. Please join FRS lobbyist Alison Dudley in her special appeal for all Florida radiologists to become Florida PAC members. If you would like to help FRS defend radiology against untoward legislation and introduce bills that have a positive impact on our practices, we need your financial support to re-elect our friends in the state House and Senate. The FRS can also show you simplified ways on how to sign up your radiology group. Contact Lorraine Roger or contact Alison Dudley at for more information. |
