Letter from the Editor |
Bayesian theorem, a foundational principle in probability theory, provides a systematic method for updating the probabilities of hypotheses based on observed evidence. Named after the Reverend Thomas Bayes, who introduced the concept, this theorem has found extensive application across various disciplines, including diagnostic radiology.
The formula for Bayes’ Theorem is expressed as:
P(A∣B) = [P(B∣A)⋅P(A)]/ P(B)]]
Where:
- P(A∣B) is the posterior probability of hypothesis A given evidence B.
- P(B∣A) is the likelihood of observing evidence B given that hypothesis A is true.
- P(A) is the prior probability of hypothesis A.
- P(B) is the total probability of observing evidence B.
In the domain of diagnostic radiology, Bayesian theorem plays a critical role in interpreting imaging data, enhancing decision-making, and improving patient outcomes. Radiology involves the use of various imaging modalities, such as Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR), and Ultrasound (US), to visualize and diagnose internal body structures and conditions.
Sensitivity and Specificity in Imaging Modalities:
CT (Computed Tomography): CT scans are highly sensitive and specific for detecting and characterizing bony structures, lung pathologies, and vascular abnormalities. The sensitivity and specificity can vary depending on the body part and condition being assessed.
MR (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): MR is renowned for its high sensitivity and specificity, particularly in soft tissue characterization, brain imaging, and musculoskeletal applications. It excels in areas where fine tissue contrast is required.
US (Ultrasound): Ultrasound is a versatile modality with variable sensitivity and specificity, depending on operator skill and the area being examined. It is highly sensitive and specific for conditions like gallstones and certain soft tissue lesions but may be limited in other scenarios.
The application of Bayesian theorem in diagnostic radiology involves utilizing the sensitivity and specificity of these modalities, along with prior clinical knowledge, to update the probability of a disease being present based on imaging findings. For example, if a patient is suspected of having a liver tumor based on clinical symptoms, a radiologist may use a CT scan due to its high sensitivity for detecting liver lesions. If the CT scan is positive, the radiologist can apply Bayes’ Theorem, incorporating the prior probability of a liver tumor in the patient population and the known sensitivity and specificity of CT for liver tumors, to calculate a posterior probability. This posterior probability provides a more accurate assessment of the likelihood that the patient truly has a liver tumor.
In summary, Bayesian theorem, by facilitating the integration of prior knowledge and observed data, significantly enhances the interpretative power of diagnostic radiology. It transforms raw imaging findings into clinically meaningful probabilities, guiding subsequent clinical decisions and interventions. The careful consideration of the sensitivity and specificity of various imaging modalities in this Bayesian framework further ensures that radiologists can make the most informed and accurate diagnoses possible.

FRBMA President’s Message |
FRBMA Winter Retreat 2024
The FRBMA Winter Retreat is right around the corner, and it is jam packed with educational presentations, networking opportunities and peer to peer collaborations. This year’s event will once again be held at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld®, February 1-2, 2024.
Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld
6677 Sea Harbor Drive
Orlando, Florida 32821
(407) 351-5555
Our meeting will kick off on Thursday February 1st with our networking reception at 5 pm. This is an opportunity to meet our sponsors, reconnect with friends and welcome new attendees to our chapter.
The formal program begins on Friday, February 2nd with welcome and opening remarks from our FRS and FRBMA Presidents.
This year’s program covers a range of topics. During our morning session, Marissa Pearce and Barbara Rubel (MSN, LLC), provide us with insight into MIPS and the impact that “cost” will have on our practices in 2024. Jon Houghton, CIO Radiology Imaging Associates, provides us with some key initiatives and creative ways to utilize IT in gaining efficiencies. Janene Markuske, CEO Intellirad Imaging, will be presenting on the strategies and benefits of utilizing NPs and PAs in our inpatient settings. The morning will wrap up with Carl Oxholm, CEO Virtue Compass, Inc., whose new leadership book “The Biology of Leadership – Embrace Your Human Nature and Become a Better Leader” will serve as the basis for his presentation on maximizing your leadership potential.
Following a networking lunch with our sponsors, the afternoon session begins with a look at data analytics and its use in driving your practice. Katie Howard, HR Consultant with James Moore, will join us in her presentation of “Weathering the WorkForce Storm”. Jeff Younger, CEO Preferred Radiology Alliance, provides us with his insights and advice on the art of “Effective Hospital Negotiations”, followed by a revenue cycle collections update brought to us by Billy Rowlee, Chief Revenue Officer Radiology Bill.

Legislative Update |
The Republican caucus met on Monday, September 18th, and officially voted in Speaker designee Danny Perez, R, Miami, to lead the caucus and to be the next Speaker of the Florida House. Speaker Paul Renner, R, Jacksonville, is entering his last year as Speaker. They held a few committee meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday and then headed back out of town. The Senate did not meet at the Senate office building as it is still being renovated. Asbestos is being removed and new windows are being installed.
The Senate is meeting the week of October 9th, but the House is staying home. The House and Senate will both host committee meetings the week of October 16th.
Session starts in January this year; so, it is quite a busy time with legislation being introduced.
The Legislators are in full fundraising mode as they work to fill their campaign coffers since they cannot fundraise while is Session.
Please support your FRS PAC to ensure the members who support us are able to get re-elected.
Best,

Become a PAC Member Today |
Attention FRBMA Members! Please support the cause. We encourage you to be PAC members and supporters; you do not have to belong to the FRS. Donations can be made online through our PAC website www.FLRADPAC.org. Thank you for your donation.
It is critical that we support both our Florida PAC and RADPAC in order to bolster our voice in Tallahassee and Washington, respectively. Please join FRS lobbyist Alison Dudley in her special appeal for all Florida radiologists to become Florida PAC members. If you would like to help FRS defend radiology against untoward legislation and introduce bills that have a positive impact on our practices, we need your financial support to re-elect our friends in the state House and Senate. The FRS can also show you simplified ways on how to sign up your radiology group. Contact Lorraine Roger or contact Alison Dudley at for more information. |
